The title is inaccurate, the correct definition should be

Knowledge is wealth itself

400 years ago, if you found some dark and sticky liquid flowing out from your wheat field, you will only be troubled and want to get rid of it immediately.

Nowadays, if you find something similar flowing out of you field, you are billionaire.

What is the difference here? because of “KNOWLEDGE”, you know that Oil is a form of energy, you know that Oil can power your car, you know that oil is the blood of modern industry.
